Short answer: water resistant, not waterproof. Those are different things, and the spec sheet tells you exactly which one you bought.

What the rating actually means

Electric machines carry an IP rating from the IEC 60529 standard. The letters stand for Ingress Protection, and there are normally two digits: the first for dust, the second for water. When you see an X in the first position — IPX4, IPX6 — it means dust protection was simply not tested or not claimed. It does not mean the machine is sealed against dust.

The second digit is the one that matters to a rider, and the scale is stricter than most people assume:

IPX4 — protected against water splashing from any direction. Tested with a spray apparatus. This covers rain, wet grass, puddles and mud thrown up by the wheels.

IPX5 — protected against low-pressure water jets. Tested with a 6.5 mm nozzle at three metres, 12.5 litres a minute.

IPX6 — protected against powerful water jets. Tested with a 12.5 mm nozzle at 100 litres a minute. Meaningfully tougher than IPX4.

IPX7 — protected against immersion, one metre for thirty minutes. This is the first rating on the scale that means "you can put it under water."

Notice where that leaves things. Nothing below IPX7 is rated for immersion. A machine rated IPX6 has survived a fire-hose-grade jet in a lab and still is not certified to be submerged.

What that means on the trail

Across the electric machines we carry, two publish a rating: the VALTINSU EM23 lists IPX4, and the VALTINSU EM-5 Pro lists IPX6. For the 79Bike Viper S, the 79Bike Lynx, the OUXI GT-2000 and the Elvarion V8 we do not have a published figure, so we will not quote one — ask us and we will check the machine and its documentation with you in the showroom.

Riding in rain is fine on anything with a published splash rating. Wet grass, mud, shallow puddles at sensible speed — fine. Where it stops being fine is anything that puts the motor, battery or controller under water: creek crossings, deep standing water, flooded ruts. Water does not need to get into the battery case to cause damage. Connectors, the controller and the motor seals are all easier routes in, and the damage often shows up days later as a fault rather than immediately.

Never pressure wash it

This is the single most common way people damage an electric off-road bike, and it is entirely avoidable.

IP testing happens at a defined nozzle size, flow rate and distance. A consumer pressure washer held close to a seal exceeds all three. It will force water past seals that would have shrugged off a rainstorm, straight into bearings, connectors and the motor. On a gas bike a pressure wash is a bad habit. On an electric one it can be a repair bill.

Wash it with a hose on low pressure or a bucket and a brush, keep the spray away from the charge port, the controller and the hub, and dry the connectors afterwards.

After a wet ride

Let it dry before charging. Wipe down the charge port and make sure it is dry before you plug in. Check connectors for grit and moisture, especially after mud. If the machine has sat wet for a while, it is worth pulling and drying the exposed connectors rather than hoping.
