ATV Size Guide: What Size ATV for My Child or Myself?
Choosing an ATV means checking more than engine size. Start with published rider-age guidance, then check the specific machine's manufacturer rider-age label, weight limit and control reach before buying.
After selling more than 15,000 vehicles since 2008, here's the rider-weight, age, and engine-size chart we use in-store every day, plus the questions to ask before you put money down.
ATV size by age and rider height
Published CPSC/ANSI-SVIA guidance recommends no ATV operation under age 6, under 70cc for ages 6–11 (Y-6), 70cc–90cc for ages 12–15 (Y-12), and over 90cc only for ages 16 and older. Check the specific machine's manufacturer rider-age label and individual fit; missing height figures are not estimated.
Some manufacturers label machines above 90cc as youth models. Published safety guidance is stricter: machines over 90cc are for riders 16 and older. A youth model name does not override that guidance. Check the specific machine's rider-age label and your child's size and experience before buying.

How to use the age-and-size chart
Use the published CPSC/ANSI-SVIA age categories as the starting point: no operation recommended under 6, under 70cc for ages 6–11, 70cc–90cc for ages 12–15, and over 90cc for ages 16 and older. Then check the particular model's manufacturer rider-age label, load limit and control reach. Height, experience and a speed governor do not override the age guidance.
How to fit a kid to a quad in 60 seconds
Sit your child on the seat with both feet flat on the ground. Their knees should be at a slight bend — not straight, not pulled up to their chest. Both hands should reach the handlebars without leaning forward, and they should be able to squeeze the brake levers with their fingers (not their palm).
If they're up on their toes, the quad is too tall. If they're folded into the bars, it's too small.
Why parental remote matters more than engine size
Every kid-rated ATV we sell (50cc through 125cc) includes a parental remote kill switch. The remote lets you cut the engine instantly from up to 100 feet away. That single feature prevents more accidents than any other safety device on a quad — and is the reason we recommend buying new from a real dealer rather than used off Facebook Marketplace.
When to size up
Reassess fit when your rider reaches the machine's load limit or outgrows the seat and controls. Growing taller or gaining experience does not make a machine over 90cc appropriate before age 16 under published guidance. Check the next machine's manufacturer rider-age label and fit before buying.
