Why 72V Electric Dirt Bikes Are Replacing 250cc Gas Bikes in 2026

Instant torque, near-zero maintenance and 10x lower running cost — here is why the 72V 79Bike Falcon Pro and Lynx are pulling buyers away from traditional 250cc gas dirt bikes.

Why 72V Electric Dirt Bikes Are Replacing 250cc Gas Bikes in 2026

For decades the 250cc gas dirt bike was the default first "real" off-road bike. In 2026 that's changing fast. High-voltage electric dirt bikes like the 79Bike Falcon Pro and Lynx deliver more torque than a 250 four-stroke, run for pennies a charge and need almost no maintenance. Here's the case for going electric.

1. Torque, instantly

A 250cc four-stroke makes around 18–22 lb-ft of torque, and you have to rev it to get there. The 79Bike Lynx puts down 410 N·m (302 lb-ft) at the wheel from zero rpm. The Falcon Pro's 12kW mid-drive is similar. Out of corners and up technical climbs, electric simply pulls harder.

2. Running cost: dollars vs cents

A 250cc gas bike burns roughly $8–$12 of fuel per ride day. A full charge on a Falcon Pro 72V/45Ah pack costs about $0.45 at Pennsylvania residential electric rates and gives you 60–75 miles. That's a 20x swing in fuel cost.

3. Maintenance that doesn't exist

  • No oil changes
  • No air filter cleaning after every ride
  • No spark plugs, no carb tuning, no valve adjustments
  • No clutch wear (direct-drive or single-speed)

The only regular service items on a 79Bike are tires, brake pads, chain and the occasional bearing — same as a mountain bike.

4. Noise — or the lack of it

This is the one most new owners underestimate. Riding a silent 50 mph through Wharton State Forest is a completely different experience, and it's the difference between getting permission to ride on private land and getting kicked off.

5. Where gas still wins

Long fire-road days where you can't charge, multi-day desert trips, and competitive motocross with required refueling pit stops still favor gas. For 95% of weekend trail and backyard riding around Philadelphia and South Jersey, electric is now the better tool.
